Leaked: Dell Inspiron 910 (Mini Note) Specs and Release Date

A few weeks ago we ran some rumored specs of Dell's answer to the Eee, the Dell Inspiron 910 (aka Mini Inspiron and Inspiron Mini). Now we've gotten our hands on the full (internal) 910 web documentation. Along with scoping shots from every angle, we've learned that the 910 will support SSDs up to 16GB and has what looks to be very moddable internals (large Phillips-head screws hold that SSD in place). The system will go on sale in just a few days—August 22nd our source says—but we still don't know whether or not that $299 starting price is just a myth.

Android 0.9 SDK Beta Now Available: Includes Major UI Update

The Android 0.9 SDK r1 Beta represents the first formal release on the path to Android 1.0 and it is available now for download. Outside of the normal bug fixes, users will notice some major UI updates—including a new widget-enhanced home screen, a tab to pull up apps, a camera and a media player. There are also a whole slew of API upgrades that should significantly enhance usability. Any further changes between this version and the final release version are expected to be small, but keep in mind that apps created with this version may not be compatible with 1.0.

Lunocet Monofin Makes Man into Michael Phelps

Boy that Michael Phelps is fast. No one can argue it, he can dominate in almost any style of swim and possesses one of the best dolphin kicks in the world. That is, one of the best kicks aside from some random guy using the Lunocet monofin. Because while Phelps is able to swim at an inhuman 5 miles per hour, the average swimmer using the carbon fiber Lunocet will routinely hit about 8mph. Is it too late for us to book our tickets to Beijing?
The Lunocet weighs about 2.5lbs out of the water, but in the water it's positively buoyant. Constructed from silicon wrapped in carbon fiber with a titanium footplate, the system gives you the same power on a downstroke as an upstroke. Coupled with a pair of strong legs the monofin could theoretically generate enough power to drive a human completely out of the water—yes, real life dolphin acrobatics at last.
So is the Lunocet worth its $1250 to $1800 pricetag? We don't know, but it sure sounds a whole lot better than actually training. And we doubt that we'll be getting access to DARPA's swimming tech anytime soon.

The Morph Concept Phone from Nokia

Another innovative design concept from Nokia, the morph concept. Featured in The Museum of Modern Art ?Design and The Elastic Mind? exhibition, the Morph concept device is a bridge between highly advanced technologies and their potential benefits to end-users. Developed by NRC (Nokia Research Center) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom), Morph is a concept phone that using nanotechnology which enables materials and components that are flexible, stretchable, transparent and remarkably strong. Users should be able to transform their cell phone into different shapes.

We probably see this technology another 5-7 years in the future, by using nanotechnology, hopefully can lead to low cost manufacturing solutions and the possibility of integrating complex functionality at a low price

From the website :

“Morph concept technologies might create fantastic opportunities for mobile devices: * Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials blend more seamlessly with the way we live* Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving* Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension* Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, whilst batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge* Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices”

LG Launches KF750 Secret

The Secret is what the company is claiming to be the world's slimmest 5 megapixel cameraphone, and with dimensions of 103mm x 51mm x 11.8mm (4.1" x 2.0" x .5"), we believe that. The camera is equipped with auto-focus and face detection, and is capable of recording VGA DivX videos at 30fps, or QVGA videos at 120fps - for slow motion playback.
The slider styled KF750 is a very attractive handset, thanks, in part, to its use of carbon fiber on of its exterior. While closed, the touchscreen can still be used to access the device's multimedia functions, such as the finger-flickable photo viewer, the FM radio, and the media player. Audio from the media player can be enjoyed wirelessly thanks to Bluetooth A2DP support.
The Secret will come equipped for light business work, too, thanks to its email client and Office document viewer. Google Maps and YouTube applications also come pre-installed. The KF750 Secret has 100MB of internal storage for media files and the like, and can handle microSD cards up to 4GB in size for additional storage headroom.
The tri-band GSM/EDGE, 2100MHz HSDPA/UMTS capable KF750 is launching initially in Europe, with Asia and South America getting the device a bit later. LG states that the 116g (4.1oz) KF750 comes equipped with a battery that is good for up to 10.8 days of standby time or 3.8 hours of talk time. No release date or pricing information was announced.

Solar Powered Neck Tie Holds, Powers Your Gadgets

A team of researchers at North Carolina State University have devised an ingenious way to charge your gadgets on the move: With solar powered clothing. The designs use a process called digital textile printing to leverage the blocky solar panels into neck ties and jackets. In the case of the tie there's even a hidden pocket to hold your device as it charges. Convenient. A five-day test found the clothing posed no significant health risk, including electric shock, although the neck tie design did have one major flaw.

DIY XR3 225 MPG Hybrid Car Kit Finally Finished, Hits the Road Soon for $25,000

Turns out the DIY hybrid market is tougher than expected, because just this week word was the XR3 was finally finished and "coming soon"—again. And while the video of the completed car in action made me think of Centauri from The Last Starfighter for some reason, this futuristic looking kit actually uses readily available 21rst century innards to get from A to B. We hope "soon" this year doesn't mean "in one year" like it did in 2007

Lexus Nuaero Concept is Straight Out of Starship Troopers

Does one reach for a camera or a can of RAID when the Lexus Nuaero concept pulls into the driveway? Sure Jon Rådbrink's design looks incredibly cool, fast and futuristic; but then again I've also spent the last few minutes looking over my shoulder to see if Sigourney Weaver was about to burst from the wall in a load lifter to do battle with it in my office. As it turns out, there's a lot more to this design than just looks, and Rådbrink believes the car's "low weight and large presence" will be the way premium cars could be manufactured in the future. Oh, and it's loaded with tech, too.
To drive this catamaran-inspired luxury car, the driver would use a drive-by-wire steering pad and a completely customizable multi-point touch screen. Rådbrink contends that our hands are far more accurate for driving than our feet, so he's eliminated pedals. Everything is controlled via the steering wheel. "Since the car is powered by electrical motors [found in each of the four wheels]," Rådbrink says, "there is no transmission and you break intuitively by pushing the steering wheel away from your body."

The kicker is that this 14.5-ft. car is designed with lightweight materials meant to increase mileage and efficiency.
